George L. Kline (1921 -) "On the infinity of Spinoza’s attributes"
N.a.v. de recente posts, vooral die van Henk Keizer, over hoe ‘infinitis attributis’ in de godsdefinitie van Spinoza te vertalen (veel te vaak kom je “oneindig vele attributen” of “oneindig aantal attributen” tegen), wil ik hier wijzen op het zeer gedegen artikel “On the infinity of Spinoza’s attributes” van George L. Kline, dat hij bijdroeg aan Siegfried Hessing (Ed.), Speculum Spinozanum 1677 – 1977 [Routledge & Kegan Paul, London/Henley/Boston, 1977, p. 333 – 352]. Een zeer gedegen artikel, waarin hij nagaat in hoeverre Spinoza bepaalde begrippen als natuur, ratio, absolutum / absolutê (resp. bijvoeglijk naamwoord en bijwoord), infinitus /-infinitê (resp. bijvoeglijk naamwoord en bijwoord) hanteert.
Hij ontwaart twee betekenissen van absolutum en van infinitum bij Spinoza, welke laatste hij
typeert als infinitum I en infinitum II, waarbij het eerste staat voor ‘perfect
zonder beperking’ en het tweede voor ‘alles zonder uitzondering’.
Na uitvoerige
toelichting met bewijsplaatsen in Spinoza’s teksten, teveel om hier allemaal te
behandelen, komt hij dan met de volgende betekenis van de godsdefinitie:
Per Deum intelligo ens absolute infinitum [I] hoc est substantiam constantem infinitis [II] attributis quorum unumquodque aeternam et infinitam [I] essentiam exprimit.
[Onder God versta ik een volmaakt zijnde zonder beperking, bevattende alles zonder uitzondering, dat wil zeggen een substantie, bestaande uit alle attributen zonder uitzondering, van welke ieder een eeuwige en perfecte essentie zonder beperking uitdrukt].
Erg jammer vind ik het dat het artikel nergens op internet te vinden is. Jammer dat het, voor zover ik kan nagaan, niet in een of andere Spinoza-reader is opgenomen. De intentie van dit blog is om de geïnteresseerde bezoekers in elk geval op dit zeer gedegen artikel te wijzen.
George Louis Kline
is niet de eerste de beste. Hij is filosoof, vertaler van vooral Russische
poëzie en vooraanstaand Amerikaanse specialist en erudiet inzake de Russische
en Sovjet filosofie.
Naast dat hij veel over Russische denkers en dichters schreef (Boris Pasternak en Joseph Brodsky, en minder bekende namen) had/heeft hij ook veel aandacht voor westerse
denkers als Vico, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Whitehead, maar in sterke mate ook
