"Dat kan toch geen toeval zijn"

Stan, geenszins heb ik moeite met onderschrijving van je briwd en hoop ik ook dat Trouw die opneemt. Maar wel heb ik enige moeite met Spinoza zelf! Hoezo moeten wij oorzAk of reden van elk verschijnsel kunnen aanwijzen, wij die volgens hem zelf "volstrekt onwetend zijn (PLANE IGNORAMUS) omtrent coördinatie en aaneenschakeling der dingen... zodat het [voor ons, wk] noodzakelijk is om de dingen als mogelijk (gebeurlijk, toevallig, wk) te beschouwen" (TTP 4/4). Immers, "voor de menselijke zwakheid (humanae imbecillitati) is het onmogelijk om de reeks van de vernderlijke afzonderlijke dingen te doorgronden, zowel vanwege hun aantal die elk quantum overtreft alsook vanwege het oneindige aantal omstandigheden bij een en hetzelfde ding, waarvan elk de oorzaak kan zijn dat het bestaat ..." (TIE 100).
Terecht stel je dat een wetenschapsbeoefenaar wel kan stoppen als hij niet het wetmatig gedetermineerd zijn van zijn object veronderstelt. Waarom hier het woord 'geloven' gebruiken? Het volksgeloof neemt vrijheid aan en toeval bij mensen en dingen. Een wetenschapper als zodanig niet.
Helaas heb je nog geen recensie geleverd van het werkstuk van Miriam van Reijen, "Spinoza's bijdrage aan een actueel debat: bestaat de vrije wil?". Ik zie in dit betoog, dat nauwelijks die kwalifikatie verdient, een schromelijke verwaarlozing van de betekenis van het onderscheid in drie kennissoorten juist voor deze kwestie. GELOVEN we niet allemaal gewoon in onze vrijheid en in het toeval in de wereld, terwijl wij op het hoogste puntje van onze ziel weten en meer en meer ook in het alledaagae leven gaan beseffen dat strikte natuurwetten alles beheersen, in de wereld en in onszelf? Ook lijkt Van Reijen zich weinig bewust te zijn dat er van zoiets als een aparte wil als binnenboordmotor vlg Spinoza geen sprake kan zijn. Haar gefilosofeer raakt kant nog wal en zal op de manier zoals zij wil geen enkele
wetenschapsbeoefenaar. Je moet zo iemand wijzen op de vooronderstellingen van zijn eigen methode.

Dank, je wijst op een zekere onvolkomenheid in de verwoording door Spinoza van wat hij kennelijk bedoelde (assignari was wellicht niet het meest passende werkwoord; misschien plaatste hij zich op dat moment op de positie van een intellectus infinitus, zoals hij soms deed). Maar zoals we de boer die zei dat het erf van de buurman op de kip vloog, heel goed begrijpen, zo doen we dat Spinoza hier ook. Hij doelde duidelijk op de algemene overtuiging dat alles een oorzaak heeft en/of dat we van alles de reden kunnen geven - in principe, wij zeker niet in de praktijk. Het ging hem hier dus om de algemene intelligibiliteit van de wereld, maar inderdaad enigszins krakkemikkig uitgedrukt. Hoe makkelijk lees je over iets heen!
Over de rest (onze onwetendheid en 'dus' ons uitgaan van een vrije wil) heb ik het hier vaak genoeg gehad.
Intussen heb jij hier je recensie van de lezing van Miriam van Reijen al gegeven; ok ik er aan toekom, weet ik nog niet.

De quantummechanica is indeterministisch, i.t.t. Spinoza's leer. Bijvoorbeeld, volgens de QM is het exacte vervalsmoment van een atoom bepaald door een bepaalde kansverdeling. I.h.a. is de QM een theorie die precies mogelijkheden (vervat in kansverdelingen) voorspelt. Maar wat er precies gebeurt is een ons onbekende uitkomst van een kansproces. In deze zin bestaat toeval volgens de QM, de beste natuurkundige theorie die we op dit moment hebben. Je kunt dus beter geloven dat iets wel toevallig kan gebeuren.

Sommige theoretisch natuurkundigen blijven ervan overtuigd dat er achter/onder dat (voor ons ogenschijnlijke) indeterminisme tóch deterministische wetten schuilgaan, waar wij (nog) niet bij kunnen en die wij (nu nog) niet kunnen kennen. Maar wie weet, de wetenschap schrijdt gestaag voort. De komende eeuwen moeten ook wat te doen hebben. Wellicht zal ooit nog eens blijken dat God toch niet dobbelt.

@Jos Groot. Ik zie niet de tegenstelling tussen de quantummechanica en Spinoza's leer. En citeer uit Richard Feynman, QED. The strange theory of light and matter (1985), p. 19: "Nature permits us to calculate only probabilities". Dat is precies ook het standpunt van Spinoza (zie citaten boven). Maar dat impliceert geenszins een indeterminisme van de natuur, wel onze onbekendheid met merendeel van haar oneindige mechanismen: "the enormous intertwining of tremendous numbers of photon exchanges and interferences" (ib.114), zodat de natuur een 'horrible mess' (149) lijkt.

@Stan: ik denk niet dat we ooit met zekerheid te weten komen of de wereld deterministisch is of niet. Wie weet is dit ook wel een variabele, en is de wereld deels het een en deels het ander. We kunnen van een theorie alleen zeggen of hij meer of minder goed aansluit bij onze waarnemingen. Momenteel is de beste theorie een indeterministische, en is het verstandelijk gezien het beste aan te nemen dat de wereld indeterministisch is.

@Wim: het indeterminisme van QM stoelt niet op onze onwetendheid, maar is fundamenteel. Het stelt bijvoorbeeld dat we het vervalsmoment van een radioactief atoom nooit zullen kennen (maar hooguit het gemiddelde moment van een groot aantal atomen). Er wordt daarom ook wel gezegd dat dit vervalsmoment oorzaakloos is.

Dit is dus een hele sterke uitspraak van de QM. Het wiskundige formalisme laat overigens wel een deterministische interpretatie toe zoals die van Bohm, maar die is omstreden.

De discussie loopt al jaren. Einstein kon al niet in dit soort "absoluut toeval" geloven. Dat heeft geleid tot onderzoek naar 'verborgen variabele theorieen", theorieen die op de een of andere manier toch het vervalsmoment van een enkel atoom geven, bijvoorbeeld. Er is echter wiskundig en met experimenten bewezen dat hele klassen van dit soort theorieen niet kunnen bestaan.

De hamvraag lijkt mij dan wat Spinoza onder "oorzaak" verstaat.

Ik weet niet hoe geavanceerd Spinoza over oorzaken dacht. In het simpelste model heeft elke gebeurtenis die een ding betreft al minstens twee oorzaken. Bijvoorbeeld, als ik een bal laat vallen is de ene oorzaak dat ik de bal los laat, en de andere dat wat de bal doet bestaan. Zonder de bal zou hij niet kunnen vallen. In de realiteit is er niet sprake van een gevolg door een (1) oorzaak. Libbrecht noemt dit lineaire causaliteit. Eerder is er sprake van iets dat je netwerk- of veldcausaliteit zou kunnen noemen. Alles heeft vele oorzaken.

1. Inderdaad heeft elke fysische gebeurtenis meerdere oorzaken, of beter: je hebt de positie en snelheden van alle deeltjes in het heelal nodig om de toestand op het volgende ogenblik te berekenen, want alle deeltjes beinvloeden elkaar (wat Leibniz al wist).
2. Er zijn -toegegeven een minderheid- van vooraanstaande fysici (Gerard 't Hoofd, Roger Penrose...) die geloven dat de QM zal vervangen worden door een nieuwe theorie, die mogelijk wel deterministisch zal zijn. De QM lijdt aan contradicties (zoals de kat van Schroedinger bv.).

1. Op die manier kun je het bekijken, mee eens. Dit is wel het beeld van de klassieke natuurkunde.
2. Het meetprobleem (de kat ...) zie ik niet als een contradictie, maar als een leemte. De essentie is dat we niet precies weten hoe en waarom een superpositie, een potentialiteit, een beschrijving van wat er mogelijk gaat gebeuren, overgaat in een actualiteit, dus van wat er gebeurt.

Ik heb er geen probleem mee om van een leemte te spreken in plaats van een contradictie. Het woord contradictie is inderdaad alleen van toepassing als je niet bereid bent om de implicaties van de QM op het wereldbeeld als acceptabel te beschouwen. Dat is wat Einstein deed. Met zijn gedachte-experiment Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen toonde hij aan dat de QM impliceerde dat er ofwel geen localiteit bestond (dwz een gebeurtenis kan ogenblikkelijk effect hebben op twwe plaatsen tegelijk, ook al zijn die lichtjaren van elkaar verwijderd), ofwel geen realiteit. Over dit laatste zei Einstein: dit zou betekenen dat de maan niet bestaat zolang er niemand naar kijkt. Reële Experimenten op basis van de Bell stellingen hebben aangetoond dat alleen de laatste optie overblijft als consequentie van QM: er is geen realiteit...Dit vind ik een contradictie. Ter info: hierbij een link naar een artikel van Gerard 't Hooft (behorend tot het Spinoza instituut... toeval?) waarin hij aangeeft dat de QM een macroscopische beschrijving zou kunnen zijn van een onderliggende deterministische realiteit: http://arxiv.org/abs/quant-ph/0212095

Het artikel van Gerard 't Hooft op het webadres dat ik hierboven aangeef, dateert van 2002. Ik heb de voorbije dagen wat verder gezocht, en gevonden dat de auteur intussen nog heel wat bijkomend heeft gepubliceerd over dit onderwerp, en nu nog betere argumenten (wiskundige, die ik niet kan volgen maar waarvan ik op het web geen ontkrachting lijk te vinden) blijkt te hebben om te blijven argumenteren dat de natuur deterministisch is. Het indeterminisme van de quantum mechanica (inclusief de Bell experimenten die de QM lijken te bevestigen) is wiskundig verklaarbaar vanuit een alternatieve determistische theorie die ervan uitgaat dat de huidig gekende deeltjes (quarks, elektronen...) bestaan uit een grote hoeveelheid veel kleinere en meer elementaire deeltjes (de plack schaal). Deze kleinere deeltjes gedragen zich deterministisch, en leiden tot het schijnbaar indeterministisch gedrag op grotere schaal. Op nog grotere schaal (de dingen uit onze leefwereld) wordt het gedrag dan opnieuw deterministisch. Het volledige artikel vind je op onderstaande link:

Het laatste woord hierover is niet gezegd, maar de deterministische hypothese heeft duidelijk nog niet afgedaan. Misschien krijgt Einstein uiteindelijk wel gelijk.

@Jos een Mark. Met belangstelling heb ik jullie' natuurkundig-erudiete discussie gevolgd. Nu hebben wij over honderden processen een uitermate inadequats kennis. Adequaat echter weten wij met opperste zekerheid dat 1)alles een oorzaak/ oorzaken heeft, die 2) wetmatig werkt/werken. Het tegendeel van deze twee fundamentele theoremata kunnen wij niet eens denken. Zij worden bevestigd in al onze duizenden ervaringen, waartegen een handvol zgn experimenten niet op kunnen. Hoge natuurkunde is niet enkel, niet in eerste instantie, een zaak van het laboratorium of de
academie, maar van u en mij, geformuleerd door Spinoza.

@Mark 31-05-2013: Ik heb weet van dat artikel van 't Hooft. Wat hij aantoont is dat er een deterministische onderlaag onder de QM is aan te brengen. Het is een zogeheten "verborgen variabelen theorie" (VVT). Zo'n theorie bevat minimaal een variabele die verborgen, niet toegankelijk is voor de QM. Dus met de QM kun je die niet uitrekenen. De Broglie-Bohm interpretatie van de QM is een vroegere VVT, eveneens deterministisch. De uitdaging is natuurlijk experimenteel bewijs voor de juistheid van dit soort interpretaties te vinden. Dat is er (nog) niet.

@Wim 01-06-2013: Betreffende het wetmatige: je beseft dat de quantummechanica wetmatigheden geeft voor hoe kansen evolueren in de tijd? Dat wil zeggen dat je de QM kunt zien als een theorie die precies geeft hoe potentialiteiten (gegeven door kansverdelingen) zich in de tijd ontwikkelen. Maar de overgang van potentialiteit naar actialiteit, van mogelijkheden naar wat er echt gebeurt, is een zaak van zuiver toeval. Je kunt voor de selectie van een mogelijkheid geen oorzaak aanwijzen. Het is de uitkomst van een blind toevalsproces. Vergelijk het met het gooien van een dobbelsteen, waarvoor we geen oorzaak van een enkele uitkomst aan kunnen geven (ook niet met klassieke mechanica, dus).

Wat bedoel je overigens met je laatste zin? :

"Hoge natuurkunde is niet enkel, niet in eerste instantie, een zaak van het laboratorium of de academie, maar van u en mij, geformuleerd door Spinoza."

Is dit een uitspraak van Spinoza???

Dat alles een oorzaak heeft, wil natuurlijk niet zeggen dat er tussen willekeurige verschijnselen een oorzakelijk verband bestaat. Ik kocht vorige week een t-shirt voor mijn zoon met daarop het cijfer 66. 's Avonds controleerde ik mijn mailbox en zag dat ik 66 berichten had ontvangen. Beide gebeurtenissen hebben een oorzaak. En ook het feit dat beide gebeurtenissen mij op dezelfde dag overkwamen heeft een oorzaak (of inderdaad beter; een veld van oorzaken). Maar dat betekent natuurlijk niet dat beide gebeurtenissen ook oorzakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Ik zou het gebrek aan oorzakelijk verband tussen beide gebeurtenissen 'toevallig' willen noemen. Een complottheoreticus redeneert anders. Die zou waarschijnlijk zeggen 'ze gaan wel ver hè, die Amerikanen met PRISM: zebespieden me tijdens het kopen van kinderkleding en manipuleren vervolgens mijn mailbox op zo'n manier dat ik precies het opschrift van het gekochte kindert- shirt op mijn scherm krijg.

Er zijn geen "willekeurige verschijnselen". De willekeur zit in de relatie die wij zoeken (en niet vinden). En ja dat mag je dan 'toevallig' noemen (dat toeval brengen wij zelf aan). Maar de dingen zelf zitten alle in een netwerk verknoopt. Pas als we dat hele netwerk zouden kunnen overzien (vanuit Gods oog - niet met PRISM) zou iets te zeggen zijn over wat wat (mede; nabij of verwijderd) veroorzaakte. Wat die 2x 66 betreft; goedgelovige zielen zouden wellicht van een 'wonder' spreken, net zoals zo iemand die het verongelukte vliegtuig had gemist, graag Gods hand in zijn redding ziet... Maar hij had gelijk dat er een oorzaak voor het missen van dat vliegtuig én voor het ongeluk ervan moest zijn. Ja de wegen van God ofwel de natuur zijn ondoorgrondelijk.
Goed trouwens dat je je zoon geen T-shirt met cijfer 69 gaf.

Hoezo 'er zijn geen willekeurige verschijnselen"? U bedoelt waarschijnlijk dat volgens Spinoza (en daarom dus ook volgens U?) alles uiteindelijk immanent veroorzaakt wordt door God. Maar waarom zou mij dat verbieden om de term 'willekeurige verschijnselen' te gebruiken? Waarom zou ik niet het vermoeden mogen meedelen dat er buiten die immanente veroorzaking verder geen enkel causaal verband is tussen twee verschijnselen?
Als ik het wel heb zegt Spinoza zelf ergens dat hij 'contingent' noemt wat niet noodzakelijkerwijs existeert (de definities van deel 4?; ik heb de Ethica hier niet bij de hand). Misschien moet u hem eens een boze brief schrijven. Of zou het begrip 'contingent' ons bij nader inzien misschien wel degelijk van nut kunnen zijn?

Het begrip 'contingent' is ons zéér van nut, Spinoza gebruikt het ook regelmatig (vooral in de TTP). Daar wij alle dingen (als in één oogopslag) niet kunnen kennen, zijn ze "voor ons" contingent (lijken ze contingent). Maar op zichzelf - in de natuur - zijn ze dat niet. In de natuur is er - inderdaad - "immanente veroorzaking". Voor ons kan er geen enkel causaal verband tussen twee verschijnselen lijken te zijn (dat er dus wel moet zijn, maar meestal voor ons onkenbaar; maar de wetenschap schrijdt voort en maakt almaar meer verschijnselen kenbaar).

Is het naar uw inzicht principieel mogelijk of onmogelijk dat de bovenstaande 66-voorvallen ALLEEN causaal verbonden zijn via de spinozistische immanente veroorzaking?

Ze zitten hoe-dan-ook in één causaal netwerk van de natuur, dus ja, mogelijk ('alleen' hoeft daar niet bijgezet te worden: er is maar één werkelijkheid)

ik geloof dat we elkaar misverstaan. Met 'alleen' wil ik niet uitdrukken dat er meerdere werkelijkheden zouden zijn, maar dat er buiten de immanente veroorzaking ook nog andere causale banden kunnen bestaan binnen dezelfde werkelijkheid. Wanneer in het bovenstaande voorbeeld het aantal e-mails van 66 inderdaad door een CIA-agent zou zijn gemanipuleerd op basis van het opschrift van het door mij gekochte t-shirt, dan zou er behalve de immanente veroorzaking (het kopen van het t-shirt en het aantal van 66 berichten in mijn e-mailbox maken deel uit van dezelfde werkelijkheid) ook nog een directer causaal verband zijn tussen de beide gevalletjes 66. Het is denk ik precies dit punt dat de schrijver van het Trouw-artikel wil maken met zijn uitspraak 'mensen geloven gewoon niet dat iets toevallig gebeurt'. In Spinozistische termen: 'mensen willen gewoon niet geloven dat er buiten de immanente veroorzaking geen enkel causaal verband is tussen verschijnselen'. Ik denk dat mensen daarmee niet per definitie gelijk hebben. En getuige uw antwoord ('mogelijk') bent u het daar in feite mee eens.

We zijn het inderdaad volkomen eens.
Mensen willen horen van een causaal verband dat ze kunnen begrijpen of verzinnen het dan maar zelf.
(Al was het maar dat iets als wonder wordt 'verklaard')

@henk-jan en Stan Verdult. Laat me nog iets schrijven wat voor mij de zaak verduidelijkt, maar misschien niet klopt. Je spreekt van een deterministische wereld als, gegeven de wereld op enig moment, de wereld op een ander moment (vroeger of later) volkomen vastligt. Volgens mij betekent dat meteen dat als je ook maar een kiezelsteen verplaatst, de hele wereld er anders uit ziet (dit vind ik de zwakke schakel in mijn redenering). Denk aan de bekende vlindervleugelslag die een orkaan aan de andere kant van de wereld kan veroorzaken. Zo nog verder redenerend betekent dit dat "alles oorzaak is van het ene", of misschien correcter "alles met alles samenhangt". Met andere woorden, een deterministische wereld lijkt me 100 % verknoopt.

@henk-jan: ik heb moeite met het begrijpen van wat u noemt "immanente veroorzaking" en "directer causaal verband". Kunt u dit nog eens uitleggen? Alvast bedankt.

Zo zie ik het inderdaad. Dat is wat ik 't Hooft hoor zeggen in één van zijn artikelen. Sommige fysici noemen dit "superdeterminisme", maar het voorvoegsel "super" is overbodig: dit is determinisme. Gelukkig echter zijn niet alle "delen" van de werkelijkheid even chaotisch als het weer, anders zou het quasi onmogelijk zijn om kennis te vergaren.

Even voor de duidelijkheid: niet ik beweer dat er sprake is van immanente veroorzaking, maar Spinoza doet dat. Simpelgezegd komt zijn redenering erop neer dat alles in God is en dat God de oorzaak is van de essentie en existentie van alle dingen die in God zijn (ofwel van alle modi van de ene substantie). Dit betekent dat u en ik causaal verknoopt zijn in de zin dat wij beiden volgens Spinoza dezelfde immanente oorzaak hebben: God. Dit bedoelde ik met immanente veroorzaking: wij maken beiden deel uit van dezelfde (en volgens Spinoza enige) immanent veroorzakende substantie. Met 'directer causaal verband' bedoel ik een causaliteit die boven die immanente veroorzaking uitgaat. Het gat in de ruit voor mij en mijn woeduitbarsting van gisteravond hebben in mijn visie causaal meer met elkaar gemeen dan alleen het feit dat beide verschijnselen deel uitmaken van dezelfde werkelijkheid (en dus 'dezelfde immanente oorzaak hebben'). Nu is het evident dat het bijzonder lastig is alle causale ketens die leiden tot een bepaald voorval (bijvoorbeeld het gooien van een gat in een raam met een nietmachine in een vlaag van woede) precies in kaart te brengen. Precies dit menselijke gebrek om het gehele causale netwerk te overzien vormt volgens Spinoza de wortel van veel misverstanden (de appendix van deel 1 van de Ethica is uiterst informatief over zijn standpunt in dit opzicht). Mijn punt is dat de term 'toeval' ofwel 'contingentie' ons van dienst kan zijn in het bepalen van de mate waarin verschijnselen al dan niet directer of minder direct causaal met elkaar verbonden zijn. Het gat in de ruit zou ik vooralsnog niet toevallig willen noemen, omdat ik op basis van de mij op dit moment beschikbare kennis moet concluderen dat dit gat in belangrijke mate veroorzaakt werd door mijn woedeuitbarsting. Het 66-voorbeeld uit mijn eerdere bijdrage zou ik tot nader order wél toevallig willen noemen. Hiermee doe ik niet meer dan het uitspreken van de verwachting dat er buiten de immanente veroorzaking geen directe causale keten is tussen beide verschijnselen. En natuurlijk: dat kan ik mis hebben. Maar aan de andere kant is er ook zoiets als een ziekelijke neiging om elk willekeurig verschijnsel te beschrijven als veroorzaakt door een kwade genius die het specifiek op mij voorzien heeft. En ik denk dat de schrijver van het Trouw-artikel het in feite over deze neiging heeft.

Het feit dat alles met alles samenhangt (hetgeen Spinoza zou beamen in de zin dat hij stelt dat alles deel uitmaakt van de ene substantie) impliceert niet noodzakelijkerwijs dat 'alles oorzaak is van het ene'. Dit gaat wél op wanneer met 'alles' voor 'substantie' staat en 'ene' voor een modus (een modus wordt namelijk volgens Spinoza immanent veroorzaakt door de substantie), maar niet wanneer 'alles' voor 'alle modi van de substantie' staat en 'ene' voor één van die modi.
