Het door Filip Buyse geredigeerde Special Issue: Galileo and Spinoza, het eerste 2013-nummer van de Intellectual History Review is uit [Volume 23, Issue 1, 2013] [Zie hier]
Er is op dit blog al vaker naar vooruitgewezen. Zo bijvoorbeeld al op 31 dec 2009, waarin werd aangekondigd dat Filip Buyse met een website 'Spinoza en wetenschap' zou komen én dat de lezingen van het in die maand gehouden Colloqium 'Galileo en Spinoza' in Intellectual History Review gepubliceerd zouden worden. Van die website is tot heden niets terecht gekomen, maar die publicatie is er nu dan – eindelijk.

Zo begint Filips inleiding: “Baruch Spinoza was born in 1632, the year that Galileo Galilei published his famous Dialogues, which ultimately led to his condemnation by the Vatican. Spinoza was similarly condemned by the community he had belonged to (and in both cases the last word has not yet been said about the factors contributing to their condemnation). A few years later, in 1635, in Paris, a group of Galileo's friends developed a plan to bring Galileo to Amsterdam, but Galileo refused because he was too old. Three years later, the Discorsi (1638) was published in Leyden by the Elzeviers. By then. Galileo was already well-known in Holland.”* * *
Graag wens ik Filip Buyse van harte gelukwens met dit bereikte resultaat.Nu nog ‘slechts’ je dissertatie, Filip… en misschien toch ooit nog die website? (Daar wilde ik niet meer over zeuren, maar ik zag dat blog van 31 dec. 2009...).

Kan Filip hier vertellen of in dit nummer ook het enige echte probleem dat transhistorisch tussen Galileo en Spinoza speelt, dat van de inertie dwr materie (door de eerste gesuggereerd en de laatste verworpen) aan de orde is? De inhoudsopgave zowel als de namen der schrijvers wijzen niet in die richting.
