On the Occasion of T. K. Seung’s Retirement as Jesse H. Jones Professor in Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin, May 8, 2015.

Seung, getiteld Nietzsche’s epic of the soul.

‘This is my reason for reading the eternal recurrence as a poetic metaphor for the deterministic and eternal universe.’

‘All these thematic ideas of Spinoza became the basic materials for the composition of Nietzsche’s Zarathustra.’

‘When he (= Zarathustra) is crushed as the Faustian superman, he is reborn as the Spinozian superman. The notion of the superman is confusing because Nietzsche deploys two diametrically opposed models in his epic. The Faustian superman asserts his autonomous will against the whole world; the Spinozian superman accepts cosmic necessity as his own will.’

‘When Zarathustra gains the Spinozan wisdom an recognizes his cosmic self in ‘the convalescent’ [= hoofdstuk uit Zarathustra], he claims to have achieved his redemption.’

‘But the ultimate source of Nietzsche’s new Gospel is not only the Greek mystery cult, but also Spinoza’s natural philosophy’.

Joris Van Leuven”

Joris Van Leuven, bedankt.
