Tony Judt is dood

Tony Judt, de auteur van de monumentale studie over Europa na WO II, Postwar [vertaald als Na de oorlog], over wie ik op 4 juli 2010 een blog had vanwege zijn interesse voor Spinoza, is vorige week vrijdag 6 augustus in zijn huis in Manhattan overleden. Hij werd 62 jaar. Hij leed aan de terminale ziekte ALS. Hij was met zijn scherpe polemische essays over de Amerikaanse buitenlandse politiek, over Israel en de toekomst van Europa een zeer geëngageerde en bekende intellectueel.

Zie The New York Times van 7 augustus. Gisteren had Julian Kossoff, senior editor van Telegraph.co.uk., een in memoriam: Tony Judt, Zionism and the self-hating Jew. Dat eindigt aldus: Judt came from a long line of Jewish dissenters dating back to Spinoza, and was no traitor. In his last poignant piece on Jewish identity and the Holocaust, he wrote:

"I choose to invoke a Jewish past that is impervious to orthodoxy: that opens conversations rather than closes them. Judaism for me is a sensibility of collective self-questioning and uncomfortable truth-telling: the quality of awkwardness and dissent for which we were once known. It is not enough to stand at a tangent to other peoples’ conventions; we should also be the most unforgiving critics of our own. I feel a debt of responsibility to this past. It is why I am Jewish."
