In the following contribution, Julia Borcherding asks whether there is room for subjectivity in Spinoza's decidedly rationalistic metaphysics that aims to regard the whole of being sub specie aelernitatis. Through a close analysis of crucial sections of the Ethics, Borcherding shows that Spinoza moves subtly between strictly ratio-nalistic deduction and empirical intuitions. In this way, subjectivity can be argued to have played an important cpistemic role in the construction of Spinoza's monistic system.

In her "A View from Nowhere? The Place of Subjectivity in Spinoza's Rationalism", Julia Borcherding carefully reviews the axioms of the second part of Spinoza's Ethics to argue that, contrary to a popular and long-enduring interpretation, there is a significant role for human subjectivity to play in Spinoza's rationalist metaphysics; specifically, she argues that Spinozistic claims about the existence of particular finite modes and their attributes are ultimately justified by an appeal to our subjective experience of them.

Wat mij bij kennisneming van wat er via books.google te lezen is opviel is dat zij kennis nam van en ingaat op Wolfgang Bartuschat en vooral uitvoerig op Ursula Renz, iets wat je toch weinig tegen komt in Engelstalige Spinozastudies. Zij studeerde o.a. aan de Humboldt-universiteit in Berlijn en is nu bezig met doctoreren aan Yale University. Samen met Michael Della Rocca geeft zij daar dit collegejaar een cursus "Reconsidering Early Modern Rationalism." [cf.] In 2012 gaf ze al eens een lezing aan de afdeling Filosofie van de Universiteit Groningen onder dezelfde titel, waarvan dit hoofdstuk wel de nadere uitwerking zal zijn [cf. en cf.].
