Wallace I. Matson (1921-2012) Spinoza’s Ethics: the greatest single work in philosophy

Hij heeft geen wikipediapagina of een andere aan hem bestede internetpagina. Dit wordt hem dus: zijn eerste eigen pagina op het wereldwijde web. Een afbeelding van hem kwam ik aanvankelijk niet tegen, maar bij blijven proberen stuitte ik hier op een foto uit 2004 waaruit ik deze kon uitsnijden.

En hier is het enige dat ik over zijn biografie vond – een paar regels op de website die zijn University of California Berkeley na zijn dood aan hem wijdde:

“Matson joined the Philosophy Department as visiting assistant professor in 1955-57 (regularized to assistant professor in 1957) and retired in 1991. He was completely immersed in his life in philosophy to the end and took particular satisfaction in having seen his most recent book into print (Grand Theories and Everyday Beliefs: Science, Philosophy, and their Histories, OUP, 2011). In dat boek dat in zijn 90^e jaar verscheen

wijdde hij ook een hoofdstuk aan Spinoza: "Chapter 21. Miletus Preserved II: Spinoza"

Daaruit deze alinea: “The principal work of this outcast, Ethics Demonstrated in Geometrical Order, is the greatest single work in philosophy. (I think this is a secure judgment. The only rival candidate would seem to be Plato's Republic. But the Ethics has the advantage—as I take it to be—that most of the statements in it are true.) It was published only after its author's death, and nearly not published at all, doing so being risky even in Holland, the freest nation in the world. Despite its author's profound learning in medieval Christian, Arabic, and Hebrew philosophy, it is at the modern end of the bridge we have been looking for that skips entirely the "medieval interlude" and preserves unmodified and clarified the three Milesian requirements for scientific Grand Theories.” [p. 165-66]

Over deze Milesian requirements:
Anders dan de mythologische Grand Theories of Everything die pluralistisch waren, die twee of meer soorten werkelijkheid kenden (een natuur en een bovennatuur, goden en mensen) en die tenslotte niet-rationeel waren en zich als gevolg zagen van een bovennatuurlijke vrije wil, gingen de natuurfilosofen uit Milete: Thales, Anaximander en Anaximenes, in tegen al deze karakteristieken en zagen de werkelijkheid als "monistic, unified: there is only one kind of reality, the everyday world. It is naturalistic, immanentist: the forces that bring about change in nature are internal to that nature. It is rationalistic, necessitarian: there is an explanation (if only we can find it) of everything that shows why it must be as it is and do what it does (and being and doing are not ultimately to be distinguished)." [p. 198]
Deze drie postulaten, omschreef Matson als "the Milesian requirements" en daarvan zag hij Spinoza dus als “de bewaarder.”

Godsdebatten
Blijkbaar was hij dol op debatten waarin hij kon bewijzen dat de christelijke God ‘logically impossible’ was. Zie hier een aardig verslagje van iemand die hem uit Berkeley kende, over hoe Wallace Matson dat klusje klaarde.

Over zijn The Existence of God (1967): "Mr. Matson asks himself whether it is in any sense reasonable to believe that there is a Deity, and he concludes that it is not.... He discusses each of the traditional philosophical arguments for the existence of God, obligingly assists them when they stumble, and only finally rejects them with consolatory words of appreciation and regret. His style is lucid, urbane, and invariably a pleasure to read; further, in dealing with the various arguments, Mr. Matson introduces fresh distinctions and approaches that will benefit professionals as well as the general educated public. En dan was er van 11-14 september 1978 het Thomas B. Warren & Wallace Matson Debate on Existence of God [Warren Christian Apologetics Center, 1978, 372 pages]. “Dr. Matson, Professor Philosophy at the University of California-Berkeley affirms that the biblical doctrine of eternal punishment and "pointless suffering" in this life prove that the God of the Bible does not exist. Dr. Warren refutes Matson's contention. Debate conducted September 11-14, 1978, Tampa, Florida. Cf.  Cf. & cf.]

Typisch iets voor een Spinoza scholar?  

Een vergelijkbaar debat had Edwin Curley in februari 1998 met William Lane Craig, ook over the existence of the Christian God [cf. transcripties op de website van Curley].

Bij de foto van Wallace I. Matson. Doordat hij op de oorspronkelijke foto stond naast Jin S. Lee, wiens mentor hij als Professor Emeritus was bij diens studieproject Nietzche on Our Passions [Cf.] kon ik zeker zijn dat ik de juiste persoon had.
