The New York Times had op 27 juli 2015 een bespreking door Terrence Rafferty van dit boek. [Cf.]
Daarop verscheen een maand later, op 23 augustus 2015 deze ingezonden brief:
To the Editor:
While I appreciate Terrence Rafferty’s candid and enlightening review of Clarice Lispector’s “Complete Stories” (Aug. 2), I wonder why, aside from her years of travel as a diplomat’s wife, no mention is made of another influence on her art. A brief treatment of her birth to a Jewish family in Ukraine, the family’s immigration to Brazil when Clarice was an infant, her fascination with the philosophy of Benedict Spinoza as well as Jewish mysticism might have further elucidated Rafferty’s emphasis on instability as central to the lives of her characters.
In stories like “The Egg and the Chicken,” she dares to expose the absurdity of searching for absolute truth, while simultaneously doing just that. The attitude of the chicken infuses the egg’s existence with layers of meaning. It is intuitive feeling that she is after, not objective fact.
Lispector unfailingly serves up a delectable inner psychological terrain — arguably female, often animal. Like the Abstract Expressionists who were interested in the quality of paint and the immediacy of gesture, she has marshaled her energies to describe in words the essence of things. Lispector challenges me to go ever deeper into inquiry. I am grateful to Benjamin Moser and Katrina Dodson for this comprehensive collection of her work in English.

Vandaag volgde "Corrections: September 13, 2015"
A letter to the editor on Aug. 23 about a review of Clarice Lispector’s “Complete Stories” misstated the English version of the given name of a philosopher who interested Lispector. He was Benedict Spinoza, not Benjamin. [Cf.]
En die correctie was ook daadwerkelijk doorgevoerd. Ik had daar eerder Benjamin Spinoza zien staan en moest erom glimlachen. Jacqueline Marks had groot gelijk om op die Spinoza-interesse van Lispector te wijzen [cf. blog “Clarice Lispector (1920 - 1977) hád iets met Spinoza”], maar dat je dan net zo’n fout maakt! Enfin, het is gewijzigd, maar het blijft ook opgemerkt. Ik vond het eerder geen blogje waard, maar nu wel: de waarheid achterhaalt haar wel [de leugen, de fout, de duisternis]. Zoals Spinoza opmerkte: de waarheid is het teken van zichzelf en de onwaarheid.
